Where did I leave that thing….?

For the second day in a row I’ve turned off the dye pots after everything is steaming. Yesterday I decided I was just never going to get to it, since they’d been on for five hours and I hadn’t gotten around to pouring any dye yet. Today I set my alarm for 45 minutes after turning them on, but 45 minutes after that turned them off again because… last time I was dyeing yarn – only two or three weeks ago – I put my dye notebook Someplace Really Smart. Someplace at… I don’t know, someone else’s house? A hole in the space/time continuum? Beats me. I can’t find my dye notebook anywhere, and at this point have moved almost everything on every surface in my studio and office, and I am unable to find my notebook.

This is kind of a problem.

Not just because if I can’t find my dye recipes, I can’t restock things like Ashes to Ashes, and Golden Years. But because I think it speaks to the kind of quiet chaos my life has devolved into around here.

I hate being That Person. That Person who is always in a state of crisis. That Person who is always saying “let me check my schedule”. That Person who can never freaking find shit around a place where she spends 60-70 hours a week.

This is ridiculous and I am putting my foot down. I think it is time for a Spring Cleaning, top to bottom, end to end of the studio. A place for everything and everything in its place. I had an old district manager at one of the bookstores where I worked and he used to say, “are you managing your store? Or is your store managing you?”… and I know that mostly it was probably business-speak, and something he’d learned to say at some high muckity-muck meeting… but it has always kind of stuck with me.

So, today. Write this blog post. Express my intentions to start a massive reorganization, but by starting small – spend an hour every day organizing something, some area of my studio or office. Get yesterday’s orders out before the storm moves in, in about an hour. When I get back from the post office and UPS, eat lunch… and then… organize something. Preferably something that will let me find my dye notebook, but at this point, I’ll take anything.
